Havelock Island is a year-round destination, but if you want the best scuba diving conditions with maximum visibility, calmest seas, and the richest marine life, timing matters. Here is a complete month-by-month breakdown.
The Best Dive Season: October to May
The prime diving season in Havelock runs from October through May. During these months, the northeast monsoon brings clear skies, calm seas, and exceptional underwater visibility, often 15 to 30 metres. Water temperatures hover between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius, making diving comfortable in light gear.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
October to November: Season Begins
The monsoon retreats and conditions start improving rapidly. October and November offer excellent diving with moderate crowds, a great time to visit before the peak season rush. Visibility starts building, and marine life is abundant after the monsoon feeding months.
December to February: Peak Season
This is the best time of year for scuba diving in Havelock. Visibility reaches its peak at 20 to 30 metres, seas are calm, and conditions are perfect for both beginners and experienced divers. Expect to see reef sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, octopuses, and a dazzling variety of reef fish. Book early because spots fill up fast during these months.
March to April: Still Excellent
Diving remains excellent through March and April. Water visibility stays high, and marine life is very active. Water temperatures begin to warm slightly. These months tend to be less crowded than December to January.
May: Last Month of Good Conditions
May is still diveable, especially in the early weeks. By late May, pre-monsoon swells begin to build and conditions become less predictable. If you are visiting in May, aim for early to mid month.
June to September: Monsoon Season
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas from June through September. Most dive operations in Havelock pause during this period. Visibility drops significantly, and diving is not recommended for beginners during these months.
Marine Life Highlights by Season
October to November: reef fish, moray eels, nudibranchs. December to February: sea turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, barracuda schools. March to May: occasional whale shark sightings, octopus, large grouper.
Book Early for Peak Season
If you are planning to dive between December and February, book at least a few weeks in advance. Dive slots are limited and fill quickly during peak season, especially for beginner and 1:1 instructor experiences.
